Let's Talk Music: On Malawians Supporting Local Urban Music In English.

I don't know if I'm just obsessed with music to keep pointing out the mistakes that are barring the Malawian music industry from some massive continental and global growth plus recognition. I've been paying some observing eye for quite some time now and the Malawian Music industry lacks alot to get noticed and felt by the global listening ear.

Today I will put much of my focus on the listening masses. Most Malawians have a very big problem in as far as appreciating good local urban music done in ENGLISH is concerned. They believe that for a song to be a hit it has to be done in CHICHEWA. Its just ironic how the likes of Jay Z, Kanye West, K'naan and other International acts don't do their music in Chichewa but they remain to be household names in Malawi. What then is the problem with Malawians not supporting local urban acts who do most of their music in the Queens language?

Gwamba does 'Bola Kusache', a track that talks about the suffering street child, it becomes an instant hit. Genii Blakk, D-One, Black Mind Tha Gifted One, Third Eye, Eric Eword Matewere, Elwyn JohnnO'Dreams Kachere or any other artist does a track with almost the same message in English and no one will take their time to listen to it, not even our Radio Djs will play the song for long. Lawi releases 'Amati Andikawe' and everyone is already replaying the joint, David Kalirani drops 'As You Grow' and only a few Malawians will take some three minutes to listen to the powerful lyrics, all because its done in English. Get me right, I'm not saying its wrong to listen to music done in vernacular or the artists doing their music in the language are wrong, No! But give the other english side a chance just as you do with 'Amaona Kuchedwa' blah blah.

Lastly, a word to our Radio Djs, play music from both sides, do not discriminate. Why play more of Jay Z and less of Third Eye? Why replay Beyonce"s joints and none from Aycee James? Why play 'Zipepese Ngati Umazisaka' a thousand times in a day while playing 'Amazing Grace' once a month? How will the listening masses request those English songs from local acts if they don't know them?
