In Malawi making music has been so cheap to as low as K5,000/ $11.98 a session. As a result in recent years we have seen a growing number of artists coming up, producers remaining.the same peolpe you can not admire. But now things aren't same.
In recent news, producers set up a meeting where they finally agreed & came up with a minimum studio fee of K10,000/ $23.96 for a digital session and K15,000/ $35.94 for a live session, effective 1 March, 2014.
But why is this so? One of the urban music producers based in Blantyre, Excess real name Bright Chiligo of AGM had this to say: " We are doing this as we plan to add more seriousness to urban music and turn these hobbies into serious careers. Imagine how many producers in Malawi who still live in their parents houses and compare them with music artists who have their own houses. Its time producers benefit from their talent. Producers spend hours making music and at the end of the day they gotta benefit from their hardwork". Excess also revealed to Khunation Mag® that the producers starting with himself ,Marcus, BFB, Janta, Dj Sley, Stich Fray, Cuff B, DJ Mass have been discussing about this from last year and are looking for the right time to implement their plans. The meeting they had was held online on Thursday, 20th February 2014, when they all agreed to an agreement form on price adjustments and it was announced online the same day.
In trying to hear from other parties in the music industry, we caught up with Managing Editor of Malawi Gist who is also Desert Eagle's Manager, Brown Spade who said, " To an extent, the producers are justified for the raise. Music production in Malawi is just too much cheap. In other African countries like Zambia, a beat costs almost 120 US dollars at affordable studios. And some studios even charge 400 USD. Then add recording fees on that. However these studios are only for those that take music as a business i.e. they have a manager and a team behind their team. There shall always be low class, readily accessible bedroom studios in the neighbourhoods where all wannabes can try their luck."
As some people think the price is too much, editor & founder of Khunation Mag® is in full support of this new formation because Malawi industry have had few artists & many noise makers, with this development we will have few but real talent on shelves. We support & we are behind this movement till the industry is better enough.
So the implication here is that every one out there who has "talent" must be able to afford the 10K charge?
ReplyDeleteAnd on the use of the term "Bedroom studios", look at all the top prodycers in malawi and tell me none of them uses a bedroom studio...
